Abstract: The dissertation aims at examining discriminatory practices that hinder the inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals in educational settings across member states of the European Union. There are currently many examples of discrimination that LGBTQ+ persons experience, for example forms of violence they face from their fellow students and/or teachers, lack of national strategies addressing the non-inclusive dimensions of current educational systems, (i.e. when students are not able to express themselves freely and get the chance to identify themselves however they want to), lack of appropriate school staff training, lack of appropriate infrastructure (i.e. appropriate toilets or locker rooms). The dissertation further looks into the policies and measures that the EU is advancing in order to promote inclusivity in education for LGBTQ+ persons and aims at identifying the factors that hinder or delay equality for all in educational settings.
