Abstract: This thesis examines the acquisition of Greek citizenship through an analysis of the legal framework and the socio-political factors that shape it. It explores citizenship not only as a legal institution but also as a mechanism of social inclusion and democratic participation. By tracing the evolution of the Greek Citizenship Code and its key legislative reforms (Laws 3284/2004, 3838/2010, 4332/2015, 4604/2019, 4674/2020, 4735/2020, and 4873/2021), the study highlights the shifting political and legal approaches to citizenship in Greece. It further investigates the social and political implications of citizenship acquisition, particularly concerning migrants’ access to rights, integration, and public perceptions shaped by political discourse and the media. The findings suggest that while Greece has progressed towards a more inclusive policy, challenges such as legal ambiguities, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and political polarization continue to impede effectiveness. The thesis concludes that citizenship should ultimately be understood not as a privilege, but as a democratic institution and a fundamental right that fosters equality, social cohesion, and active participation in Greek society.
