| Abstract: | The present thesis explores, analyzes, and evaluates the current international legal framework governing the prohibition and development of chemical weapons, while highlighting its limitations in the twenty-first century. It provides a detailed examination of key international agreements, beginning with the Geneva Protocol of 1925 and culminating in the adoption and implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). The CWC serves as a cornerstone of global chemical disarmament, and this study analyzes its core provisions, verification and inspection mechanisms, and the progress made in fostering international cooperation. Additionally, the research explores the role of non-governmental actors, including terrorist organizations and illicit networks, within the broader scope of chemical weapons regulation and enforcement. Finally, the thesis addresses challenges related to the illegal production and trafficking of chemical weapons, as well as the shortcomings of existing monitoring and enforcement systems. |
