The impact of social media on youth political participation

Abstract

This thesis was completed as part of the master's program in European Policies on Youth, Entrepreneurship, Education, and Culture, offered by the Department of International and European Studies at the University of Macedonia. The aim of this dissertation is to understand the impact that social media has on youth political engagement in a world where young people can undoubtedly contribute to the profound transformation of modern democracies. Using the SCOPUS database this study involved a systematic research for scholarly publications that include in their title, abstract, or keywords the words: ‘youth’, ‘political participation’,‘political involvement’,‘civic engagement’, ‘activism’ or ‘social media’ limited in the fields of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. With the results of this research, this study aimed to deepen understanding of the topic by analyzing patterns and trends in academic research by performing a bibliometric analysis in the R Programming Language which I then turned into graphs with the bibliometrix tool.
