Abstract: This comprehensive essay examines the multifaceted history and contemporary plight of Ukrainian refugees, with a particular focus on their experience of seeking asylum in Greece. Spanning the eighteenth century to the present day, the narrative traces the complex relationship between Ukraine and Russia, characterized by a mixture of alliances, conflicts and political transformations. The post-Soviet era is examined, highlighting Ukraine's diplomatic manoeuvres to balance relations between Russia and the West, epitomized by the Orange Revolution and subsequent geopolitical tensions. The annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the protracted conflict in Donbass further exacerbated strained relations, sparking international condemnation and a humanitarian crisis. Using a methodological approach of semi-structured interviews with Ukrainian refugees living in Greece, this study explores their personal narratives, psychological distress and aspirations for the future. It also examines the socio-political landscape influencing the reception of Ukrainian refugees in Greece and across Europe, highlighting themes of empathy, solidarity and the indomitable resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The analysis underscores the urgent need to recognize and support displaced populations, and advocates for policies and initiatives that promote peace, stability and inclusivity. This essay serves not only as a documentation of the voices of those affected by conflict, but also as a call to action for researchers, policymakers and global citizens to amplify these voices, empathize with their plight, and work together towards a world where displacement and suffering are relics of the past, and where the innate human spirit triumphs over adversity to forge a future of peace and prosperity.
