This thesis examines the intricate relationship between human rights, environmental rights, and environmental justice, with a specific focus on the Roma communities in Europe. It addresses the evolving discourse on environmental rights, including the recognition of a human right to a healthy environment and the potential for enhancing environmental protection through international human rights law. The study delves into the concept of environmental justice, exploring its history, various dimensions, and the different forms of justice it encompasses. In the context of environmental justice, the thesis highlights the unique challenges faced by the Roma people in Europe, a systematically marginalized and discriminated ethnic group, and investigates the historical and contemporary manifestations of antigypsyism and its impact on Roma communities. The research underscores the environmental injustices disproportionately affecting the Roma, such as forced evictions, polluted living environments, restricted access to essential services like clean water and waste management, and spatial segregation. By examining the health, social, and economic consequences of these environmental injustices, the thesis emphasizes the urgent need to address these disparities, while it explores the potential of the environmental justice movement to promote environmental equity and empower Roma communities through inclusive and participatory strategies. Ultimately, this thesis aims to raise awareness about the environmental injustices faced by the Roma people and advocate for their right to a healthy and sustainable environment. It seeks to contribute to a more just and equitable future by promoting the inseparable connection between human rights and environmental protection.en
