This thesis aims to explore the multifaceted role of women in the military, tracing their historical contributions, assessing their current status, and providing a comparative analysis across European nations. Women face substantial obstacles in seeking entry and inclusion due to existing social norms and standards. Despite these challenges, the presence of women in armed forces has evolved significantly over time ranging from supportive roles in times of conflict to their integration as combatants. The research delves into the dynamic and ongoing process of women's involvement in the military, marked by continuous evolution and adaptation. Looking into the historical narratives of women's involvement in warfare from antiquity to modern times and into an up-to-date overview of the international legislation and policies, with UNSCR 1325 serving as a landmark, we analyse if and to what extent their integration has been achieved. It evaluates the impact of International Law, which has played a crucial role in shaping policies and practices. Last but not least, an examination of select European countries is conducted, considering their unique cultural, sociopolitical context. Key changes that are either facilitating or still hindering their inclusion in their military ranks are identified.en
