Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to offer an analysis regarding the gender diversity of the boards of directors of companies and how it affects the performance of the firms. The analysis focuses on Europe and has also a reference to Greek data. At the same time, the strategy of the European Union for equality issues up to the year 2025 and the European and Greek legislation regarding gender quotas on company boards are presented. For the outcome of the study, mainly bibliography from the legislation of the European Union and the corresponding Greek was used, while the information from the European Institute for Gender Equality was also useful. The conclusion drawn as to whether there is a relationship between gender quotas on corporate boards in Europe and corporate performance is controversial.
