Abstract: The objective of this study is to investigate femicide from a legal perspective. Specifically, it examines whether and how women are afforded legal protection, as well as how offenders are punished. This is accomplished by examining two regional human rights protection systems, OAS and the Council of Europe. More precisely, three countries from each continent are presented and analyzed in order to provide a more indepth examination of the topic. In the first theoretical section of the thesis, the term "femicide" is placed in its historical context. In the second section, each country is examined and systems are compared. Last but not least are the conclusions, which are based on the final viewpoints and findings of the topic.
