Abstract: Due to the extensive social, cultural, and economic changes over the last fifty years that brought forward unprecedented diversity in household living arrangements, the results in marriage, parenting and family life are significant. The classic nuclear family is no longer the only family type, nor is it the norm. In the current thesis, the attention is drawn upon adoption and fostering, as alternative ways of shaping families by choice and, specifically, how these institutions are seen under the prism of single parenthood at international, regional, and domestic level. This study will attempt to describe how single parent adoption and fostering are determined in international and Greek legal order, especially under the current law 4538/2018, driven by the development of traditional family models into new patterns in family formation. Lastly, this domain of family studies is still under-developed, as especially in the domestic legal order, family standards in respect of adoption and fostering by single parents are still debated owing to the Greek’s cultural and sociopolitical attitudes on the concept of family. Thus, this study is an effort to provide a perspective on the current situation in Greece in terms of new family patterns, particularly single parent adoption and fostering, and expand on the current academic literature.
