Abstract: It is a fact that the interconnection of a huge number of devices on the Internet, known as the “Internet of Things” or simply IoT, causes risks in terms of user privacy, device security, and overall network protection from potential cyber attacks. This is due to the limited resources available on such devices to support efficient security mechanisms and advanced encryption algorithms. As a consequence, the low level of security in IoT-based devices motivates attackers to use them in order to create their own network, turning the Internet of Things into a Botnet of Things (BoT) so as to launch a series of Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS) and Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks. In this way, they can steal personal sensitive information and cause network instability, setting out of order a large number of devices. Therefore, the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 poses big challenges that should be carefully addressed. In this Doctoral Thesis, novel secure algorithms, models, and architectures are proposed to ensure cyber security and privacy in IoT. In addition, advanced routing algorithms and energy-efficient (EE) data collection mechanisms are proposed to improve the network lifetime and packet delivery ratio in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and IoT. The role of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) as both data collectors and energy transmitters for a WSN is also explored, while new mechanisms can be used in parallel in order to harvest energy the environment to power WSN nodes more efficiently. Big Data Analytics (BDA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods can also be used on a cloud server thanks to Cloud Computing (CC) solutions to improve both energy efficiency and cyber security in current and future IoT environments.
