The dynamic relationship between economic freedom and growth, income inequality and happiness

Abstract

This thesis aims to provide an analytical framework and offer insight regarding the macroeconomic effects of economic freedom on variables of interest, namely economic growth, happiness and income inequality. The analysis focuses on the case of Greece for several reasons. First, the lack of relevant literature on the subject and especially the investigations of the underlying macroeconomic relationships formed in Greece increase the interest to shed light on the examination of these variables. Second, due to the recent debt crisis in Greece, it is imperative alternative sources and roots of potential growth be investigated. The thesis is structured in two main sections. The first involves a comprehensive presentation of the relevant literature (both theoretical and empirical) regarding the expected relationships formed among economic freedom, economic growth, happiness and income inequality. In addition, the theoretical premises of the variables under investigation are extensively discussed, as are the relevant measurement techniques that are employed in order to create the indexes of economic freedom, happiness and income inequality. Under this framework, a dataset is employed based on annual data for the period 1995-2015. The second section involves an extended empirical analysis of the set of variables under consideration. Several econometric techniques are utilized in order to define the long-run as well as the short-run relationships formed among the variables. These techniques involve implementation of cointegration analysis and vector error correction models. In addition, the propagation mechanisms of shocks among the system of variables is studied. This thesis also discusses the theoretical framework of the econometric procedures that are followed in order to enhance our analytical output and better define the techniques employed and the theoretical relationships studied. The empirical findings of this thesis can be analyzed in several directions regarding the economic policy of the country. First of all, increased growth found to be associated with a positive impact on economic freedom and the happiness in the country both in the short-run and the long-run. This means that economic growth prepares the ground to promote economic policies that are related to the promotion of business and that enhance the outward outlook of the economy as an economic freedom suggests. Second, we empirically define that economic freedom policies in Greece are negatively associated with income inequality in the country. Thus, increased income equality will be arisen after the implementation of policies which are consistent with economic freedom. Furthermore, the empirical results suggest that, the implemented policies in Greece over recent years have had an effect and have managed to reduce income discrepancies in the country.

Η υποβληθείσα προς κρίση Διδακτορική Διατριβή μελετά τη συσχέτιση και τα αποτελέσματα της αλληλοεπίδρασης σε βραχυχρόνια και μακροχρόνια περίοδο μεταξύ της οικονομικής ελευθερίας και των ακόλουθων μακροοικονομικών μεγεθών, της Οικονομικής Μεγέθυνσης, της Εισοδηματικής Ανισότητας και Ευημερίας στην Ελλάδα. H πρωτοτυπία της μελέτης αυτής έγκειται στο γεγονός ότι είναι η πρώτη προσπάθεια ανάλυσης της σχέσης των ανωτέρω μεταβλητών για την Ελλάδα. Η όλη ανάλυση στηρίχθηκε αφενός σε έγκυρη και σύγχρονη βιβλιογραφική ανασκόπηση και αφετέρου στην ανάλυση των δεδομένων με τη χρήση του προγράμματος Eviews. Χρησιμοποιώντας λοιπόν σύγχρονες μεθόδους και εργαλεία στατιστικής ανάλυσης και αναλυτικής σκέψης προέκυψαν πολύ σημαντικά αποτελέσματα και αποδείχθηκε ότι υπάρχει συσχέτιση των μεταβλητών. Η παρούσα διατριβή είναι δομημένη σε δύο κύρια μέρη. Το πρώτο περιλαμβάνει μια εκτενή παρουσίαση της βιβλιογραφίας, θεωρητική και εμπειρική όσον αφορά τις σχέσεις μεταξύ της Οικονομικής Ελευθερίας, Οικονομικής Μεγέθυνσης, Ευημερίας και Εισοδηματικής Ανισότητας. Η εμπειρική αφορά τη παρουσίαση των αποτελεσμάτων από έρευνες μελετητών οι οποίοι χρησιμοποιώντας διάφορα οικονομετρικά υποδείγματα, εκτιμούν εμπειρικά τη βραχυχρόνια και μακροχρόνια σχέση των ανωτέρω μεταβλητών. Επιπρόσθετα παρουσιάζεται αναλυτικά το θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο από τις οικονομετρικές τεχνικές που χρησιμοποιούνται όπως ο έλεγχος στασιμότητας, έλεγχος συνολοκλήρωσης, εκτίμηση των υποδειγμάτων διορθώσεων λαθών, ανάλυση των υποδειγμάτων διανυσματικών αυτοπαλινδρομήσεων, έλεγχος αιτιότητας των μεταβλητών, καθώς και βιβλιογραφική επισκόπηση της εκτίμησης των συναρτήσεων απόκρισης σε διαταραχές μέσω της εκτίμησης VAR υποδειγμάτων, και εκτίμηση των μελλοντικών μεταβολών της κάθε ενδογενούς μεταβλητής λόγω της ταυτόχρονης μεταβολής των υπολοίπων ενδογενών μεταβλητών. Τα εμπειρικά συμπεράσματα αυτής της εργασίας μπορούν να αναλυθούν σε διάφορες κατευθύνσεις σχετικά με την οικονομική πολιτική της χώρας. Πρώτα απ 'όλα, η αυξημένη ανάπτυξη διαπιστώθηκε ότι σχετίζεται με την αύξηση της οικονομικής ελευθερίας και της ευημερίας στη χώρα τόσο βραχυπρόθεσμα όσο και μακροπρόθεσμα. Δεύτερον, προσδιορίζουμε εμπειρικά ότι πολιτικές που προάγουν οικονομική ελευθερία στην Ελλάδα συνδέονται θετικά με την βελτίωση της εισοδηματικής ισότητας στη χώρα. Επιπλέον, τα εμπειρικά αποτελέσματα δείχνουν ότι οι πολιτικές που προωθούν την οικονομική ελευθερία στην Ελλάδα θα έχουν ως αποτέλεσμα τη βελτίωση της ευημερίας της κοινωνίας.
