Abstract: The search for effective leaders and the need for the creation of a balanced team have troubled theorists and professionals for a long time. Industries and services have initiated various programs and leadership models in their effort for better outcomes. Healthcare, although a late starter, has recently taken initiatives and implemented new leadership models which aim to guide healthcare professionals into the changing future. Several occupational groups, such a nurses and physicians have developed their own leadership models which apply to their own needs. However, despite each group’s efforts, healthcare remains a field where teamwork is needed, in order to achieve patient safety and quality care. Interdisciplinary teams seem to be the solution in this directions. The purpose of this study is to review and analyze in depth, leadership practices that were implemented in healthcare globally over the past decades and discuss with an impartial stance their outcomes and possible suggestions for improvement.
