This thesis is a contribution to the study and promotion of the culture of the Balkans. It employs a horizontal comparative method, in that it deals with the Balkans, where there has been contact among cultures over history. We have employed an interdisciplinary approach, as is required by a comparative methodology, and start from the study of languages and literature, of theology, of the sociology of age, of folklore and of history. In particular, our research employs three levels or stages, namely (a) the gathering of material from archival sources and the bibliography, (b) the comparison of the material on the Orthodox communities of the Balkan peninsula and (c) on the generation of results and conclusions of the study, which offer answers to the questions we posed. During the lengthy period of Ottoman rule, the peoples of the Balkans developed intellectual and economic relations among themselves, thereby influencing each other in ways that left their mark upon their individual cultures. There exist many differences among these cultures, which arose from the different origins of these peoples, their individual character and the manner in which each of the peoples concerned expressed themselves intellectually and spiritually. Nevertheless, there is a Balkan community which displays common features in terms of its way of life, its outlook and in its various forms of material and intellectual and spiritual culture. The interbalkan spirit that was cultivated during the period of the Ottoman domination and which was strengthened by common resistance to the conqueror, rested on common intellectual foundations, that is, on Byzantine tradition, Christian faith and on Greek culture. In the Balkan peninsula, a culturally united area, as we have already noted, independently of language, governmental administration and ethnic structures, customs were enacted, whose origins lay in the distant past. Such customs, however, displayed similar ritual functions. These rituals include the Shaming and Death of Judas, the Perperouna and the tosavia. Such customs are rituals (laika drōmena), which Katerina Kakouri defines as organized, dramatized sacred spectacles, ‘ dramatized rites’ . During the winter ritual processions round villages or town neighbourhoods (‘agermoi’), children go into the streets, holding a matsouki, that is, a large, thick piece of wood, which sometimes has a phallic significance. With this they knock on doors. They use it as a poker and to protect themselves from dogs. During the spring ritual processions round villages or town neighbourhoods, they carry round baskets decorated with flowers, images of swallows, the Cross and Doll of Lazarus, among other objects. During the twelve days of Christmas, the carnival period, fancy dress is worn. Almost all of these customs are directly dependent upon the cycle of nature. Their aim is almost always to ensure by means of magic a fruitful agricultural year. The Anastenaria is an older ritual. It links the popular cult of SS. Constantine and Helena with pre-Christian traditions of sun worship, with the religious phenomenon of ecstasy and with ritual firewalking. In its oldest attested form, firewalking was performed by Greeks and Bulgarians, in the area of the village of Kosti, in eastern Rumelia, near today’s borders with Bulgaria and Turkey. Although in Bulgaria this ritual involving ecstasy disappeared after World War II, it continues to be performed in Greece, after being revived, despite the active opposition of the Church. Similar ecstatic dances, albeit lacking the element of ritual firewalking, are to be found in areas of Bulgaria, Romania and eastern Serbia. In the Balkans, the various forms of the Perperouna/Dododa display a fairly uniform appearance, without great scope for variation. Nor does the song accompanying it, which is linked to the strict functioning of the ritual, to faith and to the hopes invested in the exclusivity of rituals in imitation of rain. In the traditional culture of the peoples of the Balkans, women enjoy an important and specific role, particularly in regard to the family and magic rituals intended to increase fertility. The Day of the Midwife, whose form betrays the existence of some ancient and now unknown gynaecocracy, is a typical example of this, both in its original, sacramental form and in its more recent manifestation. The folk ritual of Lazarus, which consists of religious song and a ritual procession round the village or town neigbourhood, is influenced by the customs linked to the Saturday of Lazarus, throughout the Balkans, the eastern Mediterranean, among Greeks living in Anatolia and the Middle East, in Greece itself, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and the Orthodox countries of the former Yugoslavia. The religious form of this song is found only in Greek-speaking areas of the Balkans. In central and northern parts of the Balkan peninsula, the section of the song derived from the Bible has disappeared now, to be replaced by songs concerning the spring and erotic matters.en
