Homage to Varnalis: for mezzo soprano and string quartet

Abstract

Homage to Varnalis was commissioned by the Aghialos Society of Athens, Greece. The purpose of this commission is to create new works by Greek composers using the poetry of one of the great poets of Greece, Kostas Varnalis. This composition, as the sub-title Assemblages indicates, is the gathering of ideas from previews works of the composer in conjunction with new materials inspired by the poetry of Varnalis, in general, and the poem “Prologos,” which is used in this work in particular. The composition was completed in April 2008, in Baton Rouge, LA, USA. The poem is use with the permission of the publisher KEDROS.
