Abstract: This dissertation refers to the contribution of Shipping to the Greek Economy. Initially, there is a distinction of the Shipping Industry into commercial and passenger as well as in the type of goods being transported. Then, the composition of the fleet is analyzed, according to the type of ship and to the flag of registration in order to estimate the actual size of the Greek fleet. In addition, some important elements are accounted for in relation to the Greek ports, such as their categorization and the types of loads which are transported. Thereby, the direct link between these ports and Greek shipping becomes apparent. Therefore, the presence of the ports is very important in order to evaluate their indirect contribution. What follows is a thorough analysis of the direct and indirect effects. Particular emphasis is given on the contribution of Greek Shipping to Employment and other Greek Macroeconomic Indices. Furthermore, a comparison is made among different types of exchanges showing their significance in the Maritime Exchange. There are also two small subdivisions according to which a reference has been made about the improvement of the living standards of workers in shipping industry and the increase in national income, as the Greek economy benefits greatly through the imposition and subsequent collection of taxes. Nonetheless it is important to compare other sectors of economic activities in relation to shipping and their contribution to Greek GDP. In conclusion, a reference is made to the prospects and to some possible proposals which can bring better results and in this way, the Greek shipping strengthens and it contributes even more to the Greek economy.
