Περίληψη: This study is an analysis of how corruption influenced the Ukrainian party system in its shaping in the twenty years after Independence. Through the study of the cleavages present into the Ukrainian society and how they are exploited by the current political actors the system is then analyzed as it is in 2013. Traditional cleavages, such as class affiliation, religion, urban or rural location, have been marginal to Ukrainian political developments, since the creation of an independent civil society during the two decades of independence has been sluggish, and elites dominate both the political and economic life of the country. Overall, it appears that informal structures have taken over the country through lobbies and bureaucracy and now have captured not only the state institutions, but also the whole party system. The fact that even the most evident cleavage, the separation between the East and West of the country, is not fully exploited by the current political parties, makes the conclusions even more striking. All in all the blackmail system put in place is more powerful than any other mechanism and ultimately conditions the whole political arena.
