Abstract: In a world in which companies are increasingly global, understanding the business environment of each country and the rules of competiveness has become a prerequisite for sustainable development. This essay provides significant input both for those who are already in business and for those who are preparing to enter business. Assessing some of the well known international competitiveness indexes and surveys, the study displays the changes of the Greek business climate during the last few years, and summarizes the main tendencies. The progress of the business environment and the competitiveness agenda is benchmarked against two internationally recognized measures: the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) edited by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the Doing Business Index (DBI), which was established by The World Bank. The aim of this study is to explore the opportunities of doing business in Greece, giving answers to questions such as: What is the message that Greece sends to potential investors? Which are its comparative advantages? How can the Country become more competitive? How can the enhancement of competitiveness take Greece out of the grave economic crisis?
