This thesis adopts the perspective of social anthropology, studies the behavior, the social activities and the value choices of a particular age group, 16 to 30 years old, of "immigrants" from the former Soviet Union with special reference to the field of "sociality", i.e. social actions. The field research took place in the region of Thessaloniki and in some smaller towns in northern Greece, such as Fiorina, Giannitsa, Edessa and Veria (2 years) in addition to the region of Tbilisi (Georgia). The focus of the survey were y oung interlocutors from the former Soviet Union between 16 and 30 years old, who immigrated to Greece at a younger age, either alone or accompanied by a family member or as a part of the whole nuclear family, having lived until then in one of the Republics of the former Soviet Union, mainly in Georgia. The study focuses on a range of issues concerning the relationship of respondents to Greece, Russia and the former Soviet Republic of their origin, as reflected in their daily practices. Such practices include conversations, either with Pontic-Greeks from the FSU or local Greek residents in the course of their daily lives, including work places, study places, places of entertainment. It also includes such value identifications as the music they choose to listen to, the movies and the TV channels they choose to watch, etc. Using personal interviews, open discussions, focus groups and other methods of participatory research, I tried to uncover the relationship of young Pontic-Greeks immigrants with their past and how they experience it today. Moreover, the research tried to conceptualise and operationalise the notion of 'russianness', and 'russian-mindedness', as well as their ideas about living between two homelands, Greece and the former Soviet Republics of their origin, and especially Russia. One of the main conclusions of this research is that the young Pontic-Greeks "returning" immigrants, 16-30 years old, wish to return back to Russia and not back to the former Soviet Republic from which they originate. The reasons that lead to this decision are a) racism, rejection and exclusion experienced in Greece, b) the financial problems and the prospect of unemployment, c) the life narratives as transmitted by their parents' generation, which involve a high level of idealization of their lives under the soviet regime, a similar degree of idealization is evident in the representation of Greece as a historical homeland during the soviet regime, d) the maintenance and re-invention of a Soviet model of life after their settlement in Greece, e) their love for the Russian language and the Russian culture in general, which has been transmitted to them through the experiences of their parents, f) pursue an education in a Russian-speaking environment and, g) the need to move to a familiar environment, yet away from the parental home. For all the above reasons, the solution of return to Russia seems preferable to them. However, the return to their country of origin (Georgia) is not considered an option, since the prospects there for a better future are worse than those here (Greece).en
