Copulas have become a standard tool in modelling multivariate data in financial applications, especially m the fields of derivatives pricing and risk management. Copulas can be seen as flexible alternatives to multivariate distributions that can be used to study dependencies beyond the standard measure of dependence in finance, the linear correlation. This thesis aims to introduce some of the most influential applications of copulas in finance and provide some novel tools that can be used to efficiently estimate copula based models. Chapter 1 contains a review of the statistical attributes of copula - based models and a literature review of the use of copulas in finance. It discusses the intuition behind copulas, the fundamental theorems, copula inference, model selection and some recent popular developments like conditional copulas and copula vines. Chapter 2 presents a method to estimate multivariate conditional copulas in vast dimensions, which overcomes the curse of dimensionality issue. It is based on the notion of composite likelihood, where a multivariate problem that is too complex to solve is broken to a simpler, computationally tractable problem. The method, when applied to copula based problems, is found to be highly accurate however the computational efficiency of the composite likelihood methodology depends on the type of copula utilized be the researcher. Chapter 3 introduces a novel model called the F Vine that is based on the canonical vine decomposition of a multivariate copula. This model, under very mild restrictions can be considered as a multivariate, non linear and non normal analogue to the CAPM, that is able to provide estimated for both the systematic and unsystematic risk of a portfolio of assets. Chapter 4 presents the dynamic copula toolbox, a collection of MATLAB functions, publicly available via the internet, that can be used to estimate many popular copula based models like conditional copulas and the canonical, D and F vines. Until the time this thesis was written, it was the only toolbox available in any computer language that could estimate such models. Chapter 5 is a collection of analytical derivatives of copula based models that can be used in order to increase the accuracy of the optimization algorithms used to estimate the model parameters. It contains the derivatives of the three most widely used copulas in finance, the Gaussian, Clayton and copula, assuming that each margin can be described by a fat tailed distribution, like the student's distribution or the Su Normal distribution. Further it provides the derivative of a specific recursive equation for the dependency parameter of the copula.
