Developing a web based application for student attendance management

Abstract

The vast majority of Higher Educational Institutions execute the process of attendance registration, as part of their regular operation. Although this task is not part of the actual teaching process, it is necessary for bureaucratic and organizational purposes. The attendance monitoring process, is a paper-based process, according to which, the professor takes a list of the students that are present at the time of the beginning of each lecture. This process requires an amount of time which is proportional to the number of the students who are present at the classroom, meaning that, the more students present at the classroom, the more amount of time is required for the attendance registration process to be completed. This thesis, proposes an improved, automated framework, that aims to facilitate the attendance monitoring process, making it more effective, less time consuming and less error prone. We are going to study the already existing implementations of similar systems and try to design a new one, implementing innovative techniques, that require the less possible technical support, in terms of hardware and equipment. The proposed system is going to be easily accessed by the users, and is going to provide user friendly interface in order to facilitate its use. The aim of the proposed framework is to provide a new system that automates the attendance monitoring process, helping professors and students to achieve more effective time management during the courses.
