B. Scope

The Psepheda - Ψηφίδα Application Profile specifies which metadata terms are used by the University of Macedonia Library (http://www.lib.uom.gr) in its Digital Library & Institutional Repository called Psepheda-Ψηφίδα[1] (http://dspace.lib.uom.gr). Basically, Phepheda-Ψηφίδα uses the Dublin Core Library Application Profile[2] as adjusted by DSpace[3] to fit its needs, with some local applications. This document is presented as a Web page with the intent of being readable by humans, thus making it easier for people to understand how we use metadata and perhaps helping others build on our experience or commenting on our Application Profile.

Term usage is defined in tables. The left column (Attributes) lists the different attributes that are used to describe the term. Attributes are omitted from term usage if not present. The right column (Attribute values) lists the terms used in Psepheda. Names of Terms are listed before the Term URIs.

This first release of our Application Profile lists only the metadata used for the description of our Theses collection. In the future, more collection descriptions will be added.

  • In Psepheda we prefer to use multiple instances of the same term instead of separating the different values with ";", although both are accepted.
  • In its current state, DSpace does not support the creation of authority records for authors, publishers, etc. Psepheda will not initiate the creation of such records at this stage, hoping that in the future DSpace will deal with this issue collectively.
  • Terms are added first to the DSpace registry and then to bibliographic records. A term can comprise an element only or an element and a qualifier. Terms of the last type are entered in the form of "aaaaa.bbbbb" in DSpace (e.g. contributor.author).
  • For the cataloguing of dissertations, data are extracted from the Release Forms that PhD holders sign and submit to the Greek Documentation Centre (http://www.ekt.gr). The GDC collects all dissertations submitted to Greek Universities. At the last page of the Release Form, the PhD holder states the period after which s/he wishes the full text of the dissertation to be openly available on the web.
  • Descriptions of dissertations are based on pdf files.
